Well, I have about cleared this post and I leave for school this week.  Things have finally started to move toward that end.  I managed to sell my truck, we have acquired the most important baby things to ship ahead, and I have tickets to get us there.  We are planning on driving to Dallas, turning our truck into shipping, and get on a plane bound for the frozen north.  Almost everything is falling into place.  Just two major things left.

The first is our dog.  We really can’t take her with us, and the cost to ship her to family is too prohibitive for us.  You know it costs $400 to ship a dog via air, and more than that for a “shipping firm?”  That’s really outrageous.  Its more expensive than a ticket for a human!  We just can’t afford it, but we are really struggling to find her a home or a caretaker.  We do not want to send her off to the no-kill shelter, but unless a miracle happens, its going to be our only recourse.  Family can’t even help us get her shipped.  Its really hitting home with my wife because she is a good dog and has been good for the family.

The other big concern is housing in Alaska.  Its just a big black hole of “don’t know.”  We can’t really figure anything out till we get there, although my new unit made an offer to help get on-post housing because my wife is pregnant.  I just hope something comes available quickly, we can afford it, and that its nice this time.  We have just not had a decent house since 2004, and it would be nice to have a real home to enjoy.

So the next week is going to be busy with cleaning, getting uniforms ready, and packing for school.  Then its off to Alabama for a month, and Alaska after that.  We realized that we have one more weekend here (in September) and we are done.  From 120 degrees to -40 degrees.
