Two Days Off
08:04 Saturday, August 11, 2007
ArmyOIF 06-08Perspective

So I have had the past two days off.  Haven’t done a whole lot, but on the first day off I sat in maintenance from 0630 till 1500 with our borrowed truck.  They replaced the oil filtering system with a new dual filter system. That’s all they did!  Its supposedly a two hour job.  I did manage to get it dispatched though, and that’s no small task with our Maintenance Section.

Today, I was back at maintenance at 0630 with my new truck.  I have inherited franken-truck since my truck was pretty much destroyed.  Its is our humvee that got blown up by an IED in January and repaired with the parts of three different humvees that were destroyed through one means or another.  Don’t know if thats good luck or bad luck yet, but the truck has been the bane of my platoon’s existence since it came back into service.  I managed to get it dispatched and then off to the A/C shop to get that working again.  An hour there and it was time to take it to commo.  The radio and headset systems had been gutted by maintenance because they needed engine access.  I ended up doing most the work, but the systems were re-connected, the wires re-run, and the mount reattached with bolts.  After all the heavy refit work was done, I refitted all the equipment into the truck.  All the water, MREs, medical gear, etc.  I also spent some time tweaking everything inside the cab for space and clearance.  That took another two hours or so.  Then, after running a few errands for the CP, I was finally off.  It was 1430!

I ended back in my CHU and I crashed hard. I woke up a few hours later, which for some reason always feels good.  You sleep really hard and wake up groggy, but ready to go.  One of my guys knocked on the door and asked for some music.  I was so out of it, I thought he asked if I had mud on my boots.  I told him to come back later.  LOL

So that was my first days off in over a month.  Its better than staring at the walls all day, but I sure was hoping to sleep in.  I guess thats what I get for being the Squad Leader.
