Its official! The word is in and we are headed to Alaska, in the winter no less. That’s the Army for you. Take a family used to 100+ degree weather and 8 months pregnant, then move them to -40 degree weather and have the soldier almost immediately deploy again.
It particularly concerns me that, once again, I will be leaving within a few weeks of arriving. This time though I will be leaving my wife pregnant, with no support structure, trying to figure out how to survive in the frozen north. Her family will be much to far away for a simple “plane ticket.” We are warm weather folks! Snow driving and dressing for the climate are big challenges for us, not to mention how do you prepare a newborn for that weather. I really think there is a better solution, but I am out of ideas and people to talk to. So now, we suck it up, drive on, and learn how to cope. A lot of people have done similar, so I am sure we will make it. Besides everyone we talk to says they loved it in Alaska and are jealous that we are going.
I won’t get to experience it much for about a year though. I just hope they leave me in place until the baby is born and I can actually get the family settled and acclimated.

I hope you and your family settle in nicely when you get to the Land of the Northern Lights. Hmmm, sounds like a good time to break out the camera again!
You will keep us up to speed on the travels, roger?
