A Gilded Cage

So I have been dealing with re-deployment issues for the last two weeks.  What a headache.  The right hand never talks to the left, let alone the feet.  One minute everything is on track, scheduled and everybody is aware.  Thirty seconds later, you call back and no one knows anything and its suddenly a rat race to put out the fire.  Then comes DCS, the civilians, the contractors, and Navy Customs. I can keep going, but it is giving me a migraine just to think about it.

So instead I will focus on something far more joyful, my current transient quarters.  Those of you that have been following along on the Twitter site are well aware of the amenities this particular place has to offer.  For those that aren’t following… shame on you! wink  I had heard rumor that they were closing down one of the 4 Day R&R sites available to deployed troops and moving it here.  Now I can see why.  There is a big, heated outdoor pool, PX facilities better than the ones I have back home, fast food joints and fast wifi access.  The MWR has loads of stuff to do and a “real” theater showing the latest flicks (saw 2012 for free) complete with free snacks to service members. Civilian clothes are authorized, and even encouraged off duty.  There are trips out to the local shopping centers, museums, and other institutes.

So, as you can see, there is plenty to keep you occupied on your off duty time.  Personally, I have been enjoying the pool and a nice pair of shorts I picked up at the PX cheap.  I am currently residing in a 15 man GP Medium, but it has somewhat serviceable mattresses instead of cots and its about 10 steps from a Starbuck’s.  Yes, a real Starbuck’s, in theater.  I hesitate to still call this the Combat Zone, although everyone stationed here receives the same hazardous duty allotments I do.

The biggest downsides to the last two weeks have been the lack of wifi in my housing area (which has certainly contributed to my Starbuck’s tab), all that migraine inducing re-deployment stuff, and the fact that my being here means I am the last person from my unit to leave theater.  That last point being the biggest because it means I am here, instead of with my family.

So here I sit relaxing in my Gilded Cage.  All the amenities of a decent military resort, away from the real threat, but still trapped in a place away from my family. Until I post again, adieu.
