Jumping Ship
A long time ago, I entered a contest to get a free version of a new CMS called Expression Engine. I won and promptly switched from MoveableType. For those that have been around that long, this was during the controversy over SixApart starting to charge those who donated to MT for the new MT. Anyway, long story short I jumped in head first and built everything here around EE.
Well, after being on EE for so long and paying yearly to renew the subscription I decided to jump ships to WordPress. Why? First of all its free… free as in beer. Its open source, and it has a large installed user base. Secondly, it has taken EE about two years of “any day” now information to get around to releasing 2.0, which is going to cost more than the 1.x versions to maintain. I just couldn’t wait around anymore, even though it looks like it will be really sharp. Thirdly, my needs have changed. I no longer have a heavy user load, or need for forums, and while I like having a gallery, I don’t really need it built in. Lastly, WordPress 3.0 was just released and it does better than 90% of what I was using EE for, although I am still lost in the templating structure.
So there you have it. I have now switched the primary areas over to WordPress, and I still have more to do. I am already learning the templating system and modifying this template pretty extensively on the back end. Unfortunately, as it goes with these things, RSS is still broke, the short URLS are no longer valid, and miscellaneous links, photos, etc are probably broke. Once I get everything going smoothly, I’ll start working on the .htaccess file to try to fix some of these things.
So what’s you opinion of the new site?
I love the new site. I think you did a terrific job setting it up, and I hope that you like WordPress as much as I do. Look forward to reading more posts. Thanks for sharing.
